Maritime Employment
One of the big advantages of working in the Maritime Industry is the
vastness and diversity of the employment opportunities. US Maritime
Companies provide employment opportunities that range from working on
domestic inland waters to sailing on the oceans around the world.
Employment opportunities on uninspected vessels and inspected vessels
of less than 200 tons include:
Fishing guide boats and charter boats providing access to renewable
resources on the domestic and near coastal waters of the US.
Small passenger vessels carrying fewer than 150 passengers for hire
operating on the domestic and international waters of North and Central
America.
Small commercial cargo vessels serving the remote areas of Northern
Alaska.
Oil supply vessels that move cargo, equipment and oil workers to
offshore oil platforms in US domestic waters and oceans around the world.
Research vessels that are operated by or contracted to NOAA and other
government agencies for projects that span the worlds oceans.
Tugboats involved in marine transportation of cargo and petroleum
products on the domestic waters of the US and the ocean waters around
the world.
Commercial fishing industry vessels includes catcher boats,
processors and packers fishing on both domestic waters and ocean
waters around the world.
With only a few exceptions to work on any US flagged commercial vessel
of over 100 tons you are required to hold Merchant Mariner Credential
endorsed with the domestic rating of Ordinary Seaman or able seaman.
To operate any commercial vessel you are required to hold a Merchant
Mariner Credential endorsed with the appropriate domestic officers
endorsement (OUPV, Master, Mate). A license as Master, Mate or Operator
does not include any domestic ratings.
