16-hour Apprentice Mate (steersman) Upgrade Course
This two day course will satisfy the USCG exam requirements for the upgrade of an existing Master
200 ton license to include Apprentice Mate (steersman) and covers Deck General, Safety and
Environmental Protection. The USCG approval reads:
To qualify for this course the student must hold a valid Master 200 ton or less license or a valid
Master 200 ton course completion certificate.
This course is scheduled by appointment only, one student at a time.

This two day course will satisfy the USCG exam requirements for the upgrade of an existing Master
200 ton license to include Apprentice Mate (steersman) and covers Deck General, Safety and
Environmental Protection. The USCG approval reads:
- Any applicant successfully completing your 16-hour Apprentice Mate (Steersman) Upgrade course
and presenting your Certificate of Training WITHIN ONE YEAR of the completion of training, will
satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.205(i) for original issuance of a license as
Apprentice Mate (Steersman) of Towing Vessels (Near Coastal or Inland); PROVIDED that they
either hold a license as Master Not More Than 200 Gross Tons or have satisfied the examination
requirements for a license as Master Not More Than 200 Gross Tons WITHIN THE PREVIOUS 12
MONTHS.
To qualify for this course the student must hold a valid Master 200 ton or less license or a valid
Master 200 ton course completion certificate.
