The second step to getting your USCG Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) is to
apply to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for a Transportation
Workers Identification Credential (TWIC). It takes a couple of weeks for TSA to
complete the FBI background check on the applicant and issue the TWIC. Once
the TWIC is issued the applicant is required to return to the same TWIC
enrollment center to activate and pickup the card.

TWIC is an identification credential required by the USCG for all mariners who
hold or desire to hold any USCG issued Merchant Mariner Credential regardless
of what that credential is.
The USCG will NOT accept any application for a
Merchant Mariner Credential unless the applicant holds a valid TWIC.

Information from the TWIC application and background check is used by the
USCG for issuing the MMC.
When you are enrolling in the TWIC program it
is very important that you identify yourself as a Merchant Mariner.
If you
do not identify yourself as a Merchant Mariner TSA will not forward your
information to the Coast Guard.

How to Get your TWIC

You will be required to visit a TWIC enrollment center twice. Each visit will take
about twenty minutes or less. Appointments can be made online and online pre-
enrollment in the TWIC program can save a few minutes on your first visit, but
this is not required and it has been my experience that drop-ins are always
welcome.

On the first visit you will be enrolling in the TWIC program. Enrollment includes:

  1. Having your picture taken. This digital picture will be used on both your
    TWIC and your MMC.
  2. Getting fingerprinted for the FBI background check and security threat
    assessment.
  3. Providing some personal information, such as your name, address and
    physical description.
  4. Providing a valid form of government issued identification (see Acceptable
    forms of identification below).
  5. Provide payment of $132.50.

The second time you visit the TWIC enrollment center will be a few weeks later
to activate and pickup your TWIC.
